A member of the Dadaist movement from its earliest days in Zurich, French artist Jean Arp appreciated the element of chance in art as a liberating principle, applying his sometimes mystical ideas to painting, sculpture, and poetry. André Villers photographed Arp in his studio in the Paris suburb of Meudon, surrounded by the plaster models for his bronze sculptures. The amorphous shapes emulated the shapes and movements of the natural world and the sensuousness of the human form.
