Julia Auerbach, a friend of Lucian Freud's, photographed the generally withdrawn artist in his London studio. In this image, Freud contemplates a copy of James Henry Breasted's History of Egypt, a subject of great interest to Freud's famous grandfather, who likened psychoanalysis to archaeological excavation. Probing, sometimes disturbingly frank, portraits of friends and family members form the main focus of Freud's work, although his status as the preeminent portraitist in Britain led to a notable, and controversial, commission from Buckingham Palace for a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, completed in 2001.
