Famed architect Philip Johnson called it "the greatest building of the century." Frank Gehry was photographed in front of the Guggenheim Bilbao for a summer 1998 feature article in ARTnews. Gehry, a towering figure in the photograph as well as a dominant force in the postmodern world of architectural design, creates whimsical designs that incorporate such low-cost industrial materials as metal panels, steel poles, and wire-mesh fencing. His commissions often resemble large-scale assemblages or sculptures, and in fact, Gehry designs with the conviction that "architecture is art."
