DAVID  HOCKNEY
         born 1937

hanne tierney For this collage, British artist David Hockney turned his camera on himself, lying near the swimming pool of his Los Angeles home, a familiar subject from many of his paintings and prints. In the early eighties, Hockney began experimenting by applying to photography the multiple perspectives used by Cubist painters, combining Polaroid photographs of one subject taken over an extended time and from several angles. The resulting collages intentionally toy with the limitations of two-dimensional art, offering a journey through time and space over a flat surface.
