George W. Maynard was a respected American painter whose work, according to American Art News, "was characterized by originality of conception, strong and correct drawing, and good color." Having assisted John La Farge on the decorative murals in Boston's Trinity Church as a young man, Maynard went on to make a reputation for himself in this artistic genre.
This image by Jessie Tarbox Beals, a young newspaper photographer who had recently arrived in New York City, was the first in what became a long-running series of artist portraits by Beals that American Art News published in 1905-6. She was already one of the first female professional photographers in America to gain a national reputation.
