Arnold Newman photographed Nelson Rockefeller looking very much in his element, admiring a mobile by Alexander Calder at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Chairman of the board at the museum, of which his mother was a founder, Rockefeller was not content to rest on the accomplishments of his parents. As a patron of the arts, Rockefeller made a point of supporting emerging artists and developed a reputation as a collector of works in the artistic vanguard. During his tenure as governor of New York, Rockefeller was an advocate for the arts and spearheaded numerous innovative building projects, including Albany's Empire State Plaza, with its unusual egg-shaped performing arts center.
