Thomas Sills came to art relatively late. Not until he was in his mid-thirties and married to artist Jeanne Reynal did he begin to explore abstract expression. Beginning with materials that Reynal used in her mosaics, Sills soon branched out to oil on wood as well as canvas. Although he lacked formal training, his sophisticated handling of color and innovative use of media caught the attention of the New York avant-garde and led to his regular presence in galleries through the early 1970s.
