In just one of a number of events that led Rachel Whiteread to make headlines in 1993, she was awarded the Tate Gallery's prestigious Turner Prize for best British artist. At the same time, she was named worst British artist and awarded forty thousand pounds by a group of self-styled art-terrorists called the K Foundation. Known for casting everyday objects in beeswax, rubber, plastics, and plaster, Whiteread undertook one of her most ambitious projects in the fall of 1993, casting the interior of a Victorian house in concrete. Although House was a critical success, it was demolished after local residents protested that it was an eyesore.
