This exhibition, drawn from the National Portrait Gallery's permanent collection, consists of sixty-six paintings of Americans, including works by some of the most important portrait painters in the United States. The portraits reflect the range of the Gallery's collection, from Joseph Siffred Duplessis's classic depiction of Benjamin Franklin, done in 1785, to Ginny Stanford's 1984 portrait of writer M. F. K. Fisher.
