Daughter of one of Newport's most successful merchants in the sugar, molasses, rum, and slave trades, Christian Stelle Banister (1747–1830) sat for Stuart with her only child, John Banister III (1769–1831). The Banisters wear lavish clothes, and their facial expressions are compelling. Stuart added their spaniel as an afterthought to complete the picture of elegant domesticity.
