Unit 3: Abolition and the Civil War
Introduction
Although the earliest portrait in this group was
painted twenty-eight years before the Civil War began,
each of the men depicted here played an important role
in the events that culminated in that war. The abolitionists,
statesmen, and Union generals represented in these paintings
were accomplished, passionate, aggressive, and often
outspoken individuals who wrestled with the complex
issues that almost divided the country.
