What are Ask Me Guides?
The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is pleased to announce that it is recruiting for Ask Me Guides. This new program is designed to increase interaction between university students and the museum world in downtown Washington. The role of the Ask Me Guide is simple: to be available to museum visitors who have questions about specific portraits in various galleries. Ask Me Guides will engage museum visitors, encourage conversation about the sitters and the art, and provide information about each portrait in the gallery to which he or she has been assigned.

Each Ask Me Guide will become familiar with one gallery and will be expected to work at least nine hours (three shifts, on Saturday afternoons, at three hours each) during a semester. NPG will hold an intensive two-hour training session for those selected to join the program. The curators who have worked on the exhibition will be available to train the Ask Me Guides and answer their questions throughout the process. Some commitment of personal time should be devoted to self-study in order to become as comfortable as possible with assigned objects.

In addition to learning about the art and history represented in the National Portrait Gallery, Ask Me Guides will have the opportunity to interact with each other and museum staff. The involvement of university students is central to the Gallery’s desire to appeal to the broadest possible audience. Ask Me Guides will help to inject a new vitality into the museum, and NPG is excited to offer the selected students this unique perspective into the museum, its collection, and those who visit it.
