woodArtist Appreciation Series
(elementary [fifth and sixth grades], middle and high school levels; adult audiences)

NPG Education Associates visit classrooms or community centers to conduct a 90-minute session that explores the life, times, and work of an artist represented in the NPG collection. Sessions begin with a visual analysis of a reproduction of a portrait or self-portrait by the artist. This analysis becomes the springboard for a conversation about the portrait and the artist—enhanced by biographical information and a discussion about the artist’s use of materials and techniques. Participants use similar materials to create a portrait in the style of the featured artist. Several activities for each artist are offered. Activities may be condensed and presented in one session, or extended over a period of several days or weeks. NPG supplies all required tools and materials for the related art projects. The Artist Appreciation Series is designed for use as a self-contained art history and fine-art production unit or as an enrichment to existing curriculum.

Artists and portraiture media featured in this series include:
  • Romare Bearden (collage)
  • Alexander Calder (wire sculpture)
  • Mary Cassatt (printmaking and pastels)
  • Marsden Hartley (symbolic self-portraiture)
  • Jacob Lawrence (storytelling with cut paper)
  • Marisol (mixed-media sculpture)
  • Georgia O'Keeffe (painting the organic)
  • Horace Pippin (still life)
  • Beatrice Wood (clay sculpture)
