Washington Gallery daguerreotype case (verso)

Augustus Washington promoted his daguerrean enterprise in a variety of ways, from eye-catching newspaper advertisements and Hartford city directory listings to trade cards and a published broadside. He also routinely employed custom-stamped brass mats and embossed leather presentation cases bearing his name and business address, when packaging the portraits produced in his Main Street gallery.

Sixth-plate format, embossed leather case, circa 1850
