In the fall of 1813, Andrew Jackson was ordered to repulse attacks on the southern frontier by the Creek Indians, who were taking advantage of the war to reclaim tribal lands. Jackson crushed the Creek at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (March 27, 1814), confiscating twenty-three million acres of land, including land belonging to his allies. He was rewarded by being made a major general in the U.S. Army.
