Lectures in America was published early in 1935, before the end of Stein’s U.S. tour. The inside jacket cover states, “The immense public interest in the lectures delivered by Gertrude Stein before the leading universities of the United States is at once a tribute to a remarkable personality and an indication of the lively, if sometimes bewildered, response to her unique style.”

Stein dedicated the book to Bernard Fa˙, who had listened to her read drafts of her lectures and helped arrange the tour: “To Bernard/Who comfortingly and encouragingly was listening as these were being written.”

This photograph of Stein against an American flag served as the frontispiece of the book.
