Sydney Nathans tells the remarkable story of Mary Walker, who in
August 1848 fled her owner for refuge in the North, and spent the
Next seventeen years trying to recover her family.
Her freedom, like that of thousands who escaped from bondage,
came at great price – remorse at parting without a word and fear for her family’s fate.

A Reason to Believe: Lessons from an Improbable Life

 In January 2007, Deval Patrick became the first black governor of the state of Massachusetts,
one of only two black governors elected in American history. But this was just one step
in a long, improbable journey that began in a poor tenement on the South Side of Chicago.
