When Senator John F. Kennedy began laying the groundwork for a 1960 presidential bid, his father Joseph P. Kennedy engaged Jacques Lowe to help craft his son’s public image. Lowe became the younger Kennedy’s full-time campaign photographer, and after JFK’s election, he documented the Kennedy administration as the president’s personal photographer until 1962. Lowe took this Kennedy family portrait in 1958.
Kennedy’s young children were often photographed in the White House. Candid photos of Caroline and John Jr. playing hide-and-seek in the Oval Office and attending classes in the Solarium captured public attention, contributing to President Kennedy’s youthful, family-focused image.
