Alison Bechdel, a 2014 MacArthur “genius” grant-winning cartoonist, is known for her authentic portrayal of LGBTQ+ life. A conversation between characters in her weekly comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For (1983–2008), became the basis for the “Bechdel Test,” a popular measure of gender bias in movies. To pass, a film must include two women who talk about something other than men. An adaptation of Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home (2006), which addresses sexuality and family tragedy, won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical.
Fellow artist Riva Lehrer started this portrait while Bechdel was working on Are You My Mother? (2012), her follow-up to Fun Home. Bechdel provided a drawing of her mother, which Lehrer then transferred onto paper. Lehrer says the portrait “grew out of discussions about being haunted by a lost parent, and [the awareness] that one’s mother is the ultimate mirror of the self for a daughter.”
