This poster of prominent female leaders in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was intended to counter derogatory stereotypes of Mormon women. Through their grassroots activism, they helped achieve women’s voting rights in local elections in Utah Territory in 1870. But their equally vigorous campaign to defend polygamy prompted newspapers across the country to publish scurrilous attacks and demeaning caricatures while representatives in Congress threatened legislation to revoke the franchise.
Augusta Joyce Crocheron, whose portrait appears beneath the first “R” in the poster’s title, was among the writers who championed both women’s suffrage and polygamy in the Woman’s Exponent (1872–1914), “a journal owned by, controlled by, and edited by Utah ladies.” She also designed this poster, compiling the photographs of twenty leading Mormon women and interweaving them with phrases and imagery referencing their faith and accomplishments. The poster’s title includes the original name of the Mormons’ western territory, Deseret.
