Born Neosho, Missouri
At the turn of the twentieth century, Thomas Hart Benton was among the many young artists who embraced abstraction. He soon rejected that brand of modernism, however, and emerged in the 1920s as a leader of the regionalist school of realism. A sought-after muralist, he often celebrated workers and the history of the rural United States.
This serigraph is part of Harry Sternberg’s Artist Series, in which he represented the leading artists of the day by drawing upon the artistic style of his subjects. Posed with a guitar and a train steaming through the rural landscape in the background, Benton becomes part of the very spaces he so often represented.
