Widely regarded as nineteenth-century America’s leading realistic painter, Thomas Eakins was about seven years old when this daguerreotype was made. Brought up in a family that encouraged physical fitness, Eakins engaged in various athletic pursuits. This suggests that the bow and arrow he holds were his own rather than props supplied by the daguerreotypist.
Pictured with Eakins is Frances Eakins, the eldest of his three sisters. As a young adult, she would be the subject of one of her brother’s earliest paintings when he returned to Philadelphia in 1870, following a lengthy period of artistic study in Europe.
