This lithograph covers several pages of sheet music for a piano solo titled “Requiem.” The music lacks lyrics, but the cover’s imagery and title reinforce its elegiac theme. Prominent Confederate generals killed in battle are represented in oval portraits, framed by interlacing banners bearing the names of fallen comrades. Stonewall Jackson’s central place in a slightly larger oval attests to his legendary stature, which was burnished by the publication of several flattering biographies in 1866.
Gabriel James Rains (lower right) is decidedly out of place, as he was very much alive when his portrait was included among the “Confederate Dead.” The artist may have confused him with James Edward Rains (1833–1862). Although not as famous as the others, he had been promoted to brigadier general after commanding a brigade at the Cumberland Gap, two hundred miles from Louisville, Kentucky, where this sheet music was published.
